PARKS: Manyara National Park, Ndutu, Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro crater
7 Days/6 Nights
On this seven-day adventure, Tanzania’s winter months lead us to the southern part of the magnificent southern and central parts of Serengeti as we track Nature’s most spectacular annual ritual, the Great Migration. Nothing compares with this, and our daily programme will be adjusted if necessary to ensure that we see the animals at their very best, at their most numerous. From Arusha, our spectacular adventure takes us first to Lake Manyara, in itself a great wildlife destination, before we continue to Ndutu and then Serengeti National Park. As the migration is the highlight of the trip, we will focus strongly in these two locations on this aspect of Tanzania’s wildlife, with expert explanations from your driver-guide. The world’s biggest movement of animals is often the highlight of people’s lives, never mind the highlight of their safari! After absorbing all the excitement that Serengeti’s wildlife can provide, we change scenery to visit stunning Ngorongoro crater, another incredible but totally different venue for the breathtaking animals of Tanzania. You will take away enough memories to last a lifetime.
Day 1: Kilimanjaro International Airport - Arusha
Accommodation: Kibo Palace Hotel
Arriving at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of our experienced driver guides, ready to greet and escort you to Arusha and your chosen hotel. He will introduce you to this wonderful city and country. After your long flight, you will be pleased to discover that Arusha - the undisputed 'safari capital' of East Africa-is perched at 1400 meters above sea level, keeping the temperatures and humidity relatively low. All around this important city are some of Tanzania's greatest delights. Mount Meru towers above Arusha, while even distant Kilimanjaro can be seen on a clear day. Arusha provides the ideal starting-point for safari-lovers, within reach of Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. The city even has its own natural attraction, Arusha National Park, close by. Named after the Wa-arusha residents of the town, this busy agricultural, administrative and tourist centre is the perfect place to relax after a long journey… and before you set off on safari, the holiday of a lifetime. Welcome to Arusha and welcome to Tanzania! Journey time and distance: 1 hour, 45 km from Kilimanjaro International Airport to Arusha
Day 2: Arusha To Manyara National Park
Accommodation: Manyara Wildlife Safari Camp
Today, your safari really begins as we start early from your Arusha hotel for our pleasant drive westwards to Lake Manyara National Park. First of all, we enjoy this morning with an introduction to northern Tanzanian culture, taking a visit to fascinating Mto wa Mbu village. Incredibly, this 'village' is actually home to over eight-een thousand inhabitants, drawn from 120 different tribes. Today is a superb opportunity to find out about their everyday lives, visiting their farms, huts, artisan shops and the local market, with your expert driver-guide taking good care of you and sharing his detailed knowledge of tribal culture. We enjoy lunch in the village, before exploring the stunning landscape of the park, looking for wildlife on the plains, in the acacia woodlands and by the shores of the shallow alkaline lake. Lake Manyara is rightly famous for its tree-climbing lions, but they're far from the only highlight: by the end of an exhilarating afternoon, you could easily have spotted elephant, hippo, wildebeest, buffalo and giraffe, plus many other species. Pink-hued flamin-gos, one of 400 bird species recorded here, provide a splash of colour. At the end of the afternoon, it's back to your lodge for some relaxation and a delicious dinner.
Journey time and distance: 2 hours, 120 km from Arusha to Lake Manyara Board basis: breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included
Today, we leave wonderful Lake Manyara o continue our Tanzanian adventure, driving north and west towards Ndutu, on the very edge of magical Serengeti, a name associated with world-class wildlife-spotting. Although Nature and its rainfall determine exactly where the migrating animals will be in winter, Ndutu is a reliable base at this time of the year, allowing us to maximize our opportunities for tracking the animals. During our journey to Ndutu, you can enjoy the sheer scale of Tanzania’s territory; the raw beauty of the landscapes reveal themselves and your driver-guide will help you to spot any animals and birds on the way, and answer any questions about what you see. Serengeti is of course a UNESCO World Heritage Site, an incredible mix of grasslands, savannah, woods and mountain scenery, a haven for the wildlife which congregates in this fantastic natural setting. We enjoy our lunchboxes, before making the most of our time with an afternoon game drive after our arrival in the Ndutu area. After today’s journey and game-drive, your driver will take you safely to your accommodation for your overnight stay.Journey time and distance: 2.5 hours, 150 km from Lake Manyara to NdutuBoard basis: breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included
Day 4: Ndutu (Full Day Game Drive)
Having had a taster the previous afternoon, today you have the whole day ahead of you in the Ndutu area, spotting all varieties of wildlife ‘on the move’ with your expert driver-guide. Each day is different here, but we focus of course on the Great Migration, that unique natural wonder which involves a cast of breathtaking numbers, literally hundreds of thousands of animals as they make their annual journey across the plains. Zebra and wildebeest are the most numerous of the migrating animals here, grazing on the short-grass plains of the Southern Serengeti and the northern part of the Ngorongoro Conservation area. But your driver-guide will also be on the lookout for other wildlife, too, using his expertise and ‘eagle-eyes’ to try to find elephant, lions, buffalo, leopard and cheetah – just some of the many, many species you will encounter in this stunning place. At the end of the afternoon, it’s back to your accommodation for a cool drink, some relaxation, a delicious dinner and the chance to discuss what you’ve seen during the day’s safari… as well as to check your priceless photos.Board basis: breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included
Day 5: Ndutu (Morning Game Drive) To Serengeti National Park
Today our journey continues as we head from the edge of the Serengeti into its very heart…but not before we seize a final opportunity for a morning game drive around Ndutu, where we are sure to see something new. But now Serengeti beckons, and so we continue to head north and west into what is surely the world’s greatest park. At times this unsurpassable place is home to over 1.6 million herbivores and the thousands of predators who stalk them. Their fascinating habits and habitats are sure to provoke questions, so do ask your driver-guide to explain the amazing creatures you see all around you. At night, back at your accommodation, the sights, sounds and smells of Africa will continue to enchant you on this wilderness adventure.Journey time and distance: 2 hours, 90km from Ndutu to Central Serengeti.Board basis: breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included
Day 6: Serengeti National Park To Karatu
The exciting sounds of Africa will rouse you from your sleep. We make the most of the day with a 08:00 start, heading off on our morning game-drive. Later, the adventure will continue when we travel up to Ngorongoro, another African icon. It's almost impossible to spend too much time in Serengeti and with more than 1.6 million herbivores – plus thousands of predators – there's always something new and interesting to see. The changing seasons and natural light simply add to the diversity. This morning your driver-guide will help you spot some more of the many species at Serengeti, teaching you about their fascinating habits and habitats. After a pleasant picnic lunch, it's time to drive eastwards to visit another spectacular setting for Tanzania's wildlife, the famous Ngorongoro Crater. On arrival, settle in at the lodge while a tasty, hot dinner is prepared for you. Tomorrow, the wonders of the crater await us.Journey time and distance: 4 hours, 170 km from Serengeti to Karatu Board basis: breakfast, packed lunch and dinner included
Day 7: Karatu To Ngorongoro Crater To Airport
Today may be 'departure day', but there will be plenty of time to enjoy another true spectacle, before your thoughts turn to home. Ngorongoro Crater is often referred to as a wonder of the world and your early morning game drive shows you why. First, there's the volcanic caldera (the world's largest), full of grassland, forest and swamp, a setting of jaw-dropping beauty. Secondly, the permanent water of the crater floor supports a resident population of more than 25,000 large mammals. Here you'll find many of the reasons you chose to come on safari: elephant, lion, leopard, hyena, jackal, wallowing hippo, waterbuck, baboons… even the rare black rhino finds shelter here. Sharing this awesome space with the animals are the Maasai, grazing their cattle in an area which has been a separate conservation area since 1956 and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1978. This harmonious co-habitation of man and beast makes Ngorongoro unique in Tanzania and your driver guide will be pleased to explain this incredible co-existence to you. After your morning game drive, we have our picnic lunch in the crater before we return to the airport for your flight home.Journey time and distance: 4 hours, 245 km from Ngorongoro to Airport Board basis: breakfast and packed lunch included
